History and description
Estádio Municipal de Braga, since 2007 unofficially renamed Estádio AXA, was built to serve as a playing venue for the Euro 2004 Championships.
Estadio Municipal de Braga officially opened on 30 December 2003 with a friendly match between Braga and Celta de Vigo.
The stadium hosted two first round group matches during the Euro 2004 tournament.
Estádio Municipal de Braga was designed by Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura and has received many plaudits for its daring design. It has been carved out of a rock at the site of a former quarry and only consists of two lateral stands, which are connected to each other by a number of steel strings.
