History and description
Estadio Monumental, officially called Estadio Monumental Isidro Romero Carbo, was built between 1986 and 1988 and replaced Barcelona’s old ground Estadio Modelo Guayaquil.
The stadium officially opened on 29 May 1988 with a four-team tournament of Barcelona, Emelec, the Spanish Barcelona, and Peñarol.
Estadio Monumental could initially hold 50,000 spectators, but was expanded to its current capacity in 1994.
The stadium was one of the playing venues of the 1993 Copa America and hosted, among others, the final.
In 2007, Barcelona reached a naming rights deal with a local bank resulting in the name change to Estadio Monumental Banco Pichincha.
