History and description
The BSFZ-Arena, previously known as Bundesstadion Südstadt, was built between 1965 and 1967. Before, Admira had played their home games in the Jedlesee area in the north of Vienna, but their sponsor, the predecessor of utilities company EVN, wanted them to play closer to their premises and offered them a piece of land to build a new stadium on.
The Bundesstadion Südstadt officially opened on 4 March 1967 with a league match between Admira and Wacker Innsbruck (3-1). The first goal was scored by Willy Kreuz.
The stadium underwent several refurbishments in the summer of 2008 and at the same time changed name to Trenkwalder-Arena following a naming rights sponsorship deal. The name changed again to BSFZ-Arena in 2012 following a new sponsorship deal.
How to get to the BSFZ-Arena
The BSFZ-Arena is located in the town of Maria Enzersdorf, which is located in the south of the Vienna metropolitan area. The distance from central Vienna is about 13 kilometres.
The stadium is best reached with the Badner Bahn commuter rail. Station Maria Enzersdorf – Südstadt lies right next to the stadium. Trains run from station Oper in the south of Vienna’s city centre and also pass Meidling rail station, which has connections to other parts of Vienna. Trains run at least every 15 minutes. The journey from Oper takes about 34 minutes, that from Meidling 15 minutes.
An alternative is catching a train from Vienna’s main railway station (Hbf) to Modling train station. Both commuter rail lines S2 and S4, and regional trains run to Modling. The journey takes 20 to 25 minutes and trains run very frequent. From Modling station it’s a 25-minute walk to the stadium.
