Wembley Stadium is set to break even by the year 2015, according to FA chairman David Bernstein. This is one year later than previous forecasts indicated.
Accounts show that the FA, owner of the stadium, subsidised the stadium up to an amount of £20 mln a year in 2010 and 2011 and expects to do the same to an amount of £12 mln in the following two years. Apart from hosting the England national team at home as well as most English play-off and Cup finals, the stadium uses concerts and other events to boost its income.
The stadium, opened in 2007 at a cost of £757 mln, is already showing an operating profit, but large interest payments prevent the stadium from becoming overall profitable. However this is set to change as of 2015, and having been awarded the 2013 Champions League final will be a further boost to the stadium’s bottom line.
