From next season onwards SC Freiburg will play its home matches in the Mage-Solar-Stadion instead of the Badenova-Stadion, after reports surfaced of an earlier than expected name change.
Freiburg sold the stadium’s naming rights in 2004 to local energy company Badenova as part of a 10-year sponsorship deal. This deal was set to expire in 2014, however having received an offer from solar panel manufacturer Mage Solar, and the consent of sponsor Badenova, the club is now trying to change the name as per the start of the 2012/2013 season. For this it needs permission of the Freiburg city council, as the local government owns the stadium.
Until 2004 the Badenova-Stadion went under the name Dreisamstadion. The stadium, opened in 1954, has a capacity of 24,000, but with the recent surge of new stadiums in Germany has found itself to be outdated, and the club is exploring possibilities for the construction of an entire new stadium.
