History and description
Moses Mabhida Stadium was built to serve as a playing venue for the 2010 World Cup.
The stadium officially opened on 29 November 2009 with a match between Amazulu and Maritzburg United (0-1).
During the World Cup, Moses Mabhida Stadium hosted five first round group matches, the round of 16 match between the Netherlands and Slovakia (2-1), and the semi-final between Spain and Germany (1-0).
After the World Cup, capacity of the stadium was reduced from 70,000 (or 62,760 during the World Cup) to 56,000 by removing the third tier.
The stadium’s most characteristic feature is its Y-shaped 106-metres high arch, inspired by the South African flag, and which holds up the Teflon-coated glass fibre membrane roof.
How to get to Moses Mabhida Stadiume
Moses Mabhida Stadium is located toward the north of the city of Durban, almost at the coast of the Indian Ocean. It lies about 3 kilometres from Durban’s central business district and a little less from Durban’s central railway station.
The stadium is situated almost adjacent to the M4 motorway that runs along the coast. If coming from the north, leave the M4 at the Blue Lagoon turn off, turn right under the bridge, and shortly after left onto Masabalala Yengwa Avenue (NMR). Continue until you reach the stadium.
From the central business district, the stadium can be reached by following Masabalala Yengwa Avenue north.
If using public transport, the stadium can be reached with the Metrorail trains that run from Durban central railway station. Take a train on either the North Coast Line or KwaMashu Line. Get off at the next station Moses Mahbida. Trains run rather infrequently.
An alternative are the People Mover buses that run along the beaches. Take a bus on the Northern Line, which brings you to the Suncoast Casino, a 5 to 10-minute walk from the stadium.
Address: 44 Isaiah Ntshangase Rd, Durban 4001
