History and description
El Nuevo Estadio Municipal ‘El Arcangel’ got built in 1993 to replace Cordoba’s old Estadio El Arcangel, which had fallen into a state of disrepair.
The new stadium was built on a site 500 metres away from the old stadium, was bowl-shaped, uncovered, with athletics track, and could hold about 15,000 spectators. It officially opened on 7 November 1993 with a league match between Cordoba and Recreative Huelva.
However, the new stadium with its stands far off the pitch soon proved unsatisfactory for the fans. Therefore, after only a decade, Cordoba already started planning an extensive redevelopment of the stadium. Building works started in 2005 and were gradually performed over the following years.
First, the pitch was moved closer towards the west stand, and then a new east stand was built on the other side. This was then followed by two new stands on both ends, of which the last one was completed in 2012. While there were plans to also rebuild the west stand, these plans were shelved in the end.

Cordoba’s main railway station lies a little further away, north of the city centre, and the walk to the stadium takes over half an hour. Alternatively, catch bus 3, which runs a few times per hour. Get off at stop Periodista Eduardo Baro.
