History and description
The Energy Check Stadium at Gigg Lane, more commonly known as Gigg Lane, has been the home of Bury since they were founded in 1885. The first game at the ground was a friendly between Bury and Wigan (4-3) on 12 September 1885.
For most of its existence, the stadium could hold about 35,000 spectators. The record attendance was set in 1960 when 35,000 fans attended an FA Cup match against Bolton Wanderers.
Between 1993 and 1999, Gigg Lane got gradually redeveloped with four new stands built, turning the stadium into an all-seater.
Between 2013 and 2015, the stadium was called JD Stadium following a naming rights sponsorship deal. The stadium was once again renamed in 2017 to The Energy Check Stadium at Gigg Lane following a new sponsorship deal.
Since Bury were expelled from the English Football League in 2019 Gigg Lane has had no permanent occupant.
How to get to Gigg Lane
Gigg Lane is located in the south of the town of Bury, about a mile south of Bury’s town centre. The walk from the town centre to the stadium takes about 20 minutes, that from Bury metrolink station a few minutes less.
Alternatively, several buses run from the centre along Manchester Road past the stadium, including bus 97, 135, and 524. Take the bus from Bury Interchange bus station in the town centre. The journey takes 10 minutes at most. Get off at stop Gigg Lane.
Bury is part of the Greater Manchester metropolitan area and is connected with Manchester through the metrolink tram system. Bury metrolink station is served by line A and C. Both lines can be caught from Manchester Victoria station and Market Street in Manchester city centre, while line C can also be caught from Manchester Piccadilly station. The journey from Market Street takes just under 30 minutes.
