Description
Stadion SC Freiburg is the currently under construction new stadium of SC Freiburg.
In the early 2010s, Freiburg started investigating building a new stadium to replace their dated and too-small Schwarzwald-Stadion. For a time contemplating a refurbishment of their current stadium, they eventually settled on building a new one.
In 2015, they chose a site in the north-west of Freiburg near the local airfield, but it took until the summer of 2017 for official plans and the first renders to be presented.
Freiburg received planning permission in 2018 and, while still needing to overcome a few legal hurdles, around the same time started the first ground preparation works. They started construction in 2019 and hope to move into their new home at the start of the 2021-22 season.
The new stadium will be able to hold 34,700 spectators, of which about 10,800 standing. The terrace behind the goal is one single stand composed of 9,000 places.
It is expected to come at a cost of €131 million, up from previous estimates of about €100 million.
