History and description
Estadio Jalisco got built in the 1950s to provide the city of Guadalajara with a large modern sports stadium for the city’s major football clubs Chivas, Atlas, and Oro.
Works started in 1956 and Estadio Jalisco officially opened four years later on 31 January 1960 with a five-team tournament comprising of the three Guadalajara teams, San Lorenzo, and Sao Paulo.
The stadium could initially hold about 30,000 spectators, but this got raised to 70,000 just nine years later when the stadium got expanded for the 1970 World Cup.
During the World Cup, Estadio Jalisco hosted six first round group matches, the quarter-final between Brazil and Peru (4-2) and the semi-final between Brazil and Uruguay (3-1).
Sixteen years later, Estadio Jalisco was once again one of the playing venues during the 1986 World Cup, this time hosting three first round group matches, one round of 16 match, the quarter-final between Brazil and Poland 4-0, and the semi-final between West Germany and France (2-0).
Coincidentally, of the fourteen World Cup matches played at the stadium, ten featured the Brazil national team.
Upon its inauguration, Chivas, Atlas, and Oro moved into the stadium, though the latter moved out again ten years later when they relegated. At the same time, newly formed Leones Negros UdeG moved in.
The stadium sharing between rivals Chivas and Atlas had never been a happy marriage, and in 2010 Chivas moved out to the newly built Estadio Chivas. In 2019, newly formed Calissa Jalisco moved into the stadium.
How to get to Estadio Jalisco
Estadio Jalisco is located in the north of the city of Guadalajara at just over 3 kilometres from Guadalajara’s historic centre.
The stadium connects directly with the historic centre through the Calzada Independencia avenue. Along that avenue, the Macrobus fixed-lane buses run. Get on at stop San Juan de Dios in the historic centre and get off at stop Monumental, which is right next to the stadium.

Atlas Tickets
Atlas tickets can be bought online through Superboletos, or in person at the ticket windows of Estadio Jalisco, the Linea Atlas club store (north-west of the centre), or at any of the Superboletos sales points (though none centrally located).
Tickets typically go on sale from a few days before the match. Tickets will also be on sale on the day of the match at the stadium. Atlas don’t often sell out but for the derby it is advised to buy in advance.
Expect to pay from MX$ 80.00 for a seat behind the goal to MX$ 400.00 for the best seats at the main stand. Other seats on the sides go for MX$105.00 to MX$130.00.
Leones Negros Tickets
Leones Negros tickets can be bought online through Boletomovil.com.
Ticket will also be available on the day of the match at the stadium. Leones Negros rarely sell out.
Expect to pay from MX$ 60.00 for an upper tier seat to MX 150.00 for a central lower tier seat at the main stand.
