History and description
Stadio Benito Stirpe opened in 2017 following a construction period that lasted over 30 years. It replaced Frosinone’s old Stadio Matusa.
First plans for a new stadium for the city of Frosinone were made in the 1970s, but took time to turn into actual works. By the 1980s, with the prospect of the upcoming 1990 World Cup, works had started on a concrete main stand, but were soon halted due to financial difficulties.
Works were picked up again in the 1990s when a roof got added to the stand, but did not move further. In the next two decades, plans to pick up works resurfaced at intervals but only came off the ground when Frosinone promoted to the Serie A in 2015.
Works recommenced in 2015 and to speed up completion consisted of mostly prefabricated tubular elements. The main stand got extensively renovated.
Stadio Benito Stirpe officially opened on 28 September 2017 with a friendly match between Frosinone and a youth team.
