History and description
The Benteler-Arena officially opened on 20 July 2008 with a friendly between Paderborn and Borussia Dortmund.
SC Paderborn first announced plans for the construction of a new stadium in 2001, and building works commenced in the summer of 2005.
Works were initially estimated to last only 6 months, however in late 2005 the building permit was withdrawn after complaints of local residents and works were halted. It took the club two years to get a new permit and construction could finally resume in early 2008.
The Benteler-Arena was initially named paragon arena, changed sponsor names to Energieteam Arena in 2009, and again in July 2012 after a new sponsorship deal.
How to get to the Benteler-Arena
The Benteler-Arena is located in the north-west of the city of Paderborn, about 3.5 kilometres from its historic city centre and main rail station.
The stadium lies close to the A33 motorway which runs west of Paderborn. Leave the A33 at exit 26 Paderborn-Elsen and follow for Detmold / Bad Lippspringe. After about 500 metres take the exit right to the Benteler-Arena.
From the main rail station (Hauptbahnhof) or city centre (Westerntor) you can reach the stadium with bus 6 and 68. Take either bus in the direction of Sande and get off at stop Arena / Almeaue. The ride takes about 10 to 12 minutes. Extra buses run from two hours before kickoff.
