History and description
Estadio Monumental David Arellano got built in the late 1950s. Colo-Colo was a club on the rise in the 1950s and its president Labán therefore decided that it needed a new club-owned stadium.
The president aimed for a stadium with 120,000 places that would be one of the playing venues of the 1962 World Cup. The club bought a site in the south of the city and building works began in 1957.
Works were for 75% completed when in 1960 an earthquake struck the country. The Chilean government subsequently decided to only play the World Cup in already finished stadiums and the other grounds got left unfinished.
It took the club 15 years to find the funds to continue construction. Estadio Monumental officially opened on 20 April 1975 with a match between Colo-Colo and Aviación (1-0).
The stadium, however, still lacked many facilities and soon proved unsuitable for use. After only 5 matches at Estadio Monumental, Colo-Colo moved back to Estadio Nacional.
The club kept striving to complete the stadium, but only 24 years later, after it had sold player Rubio to Bologna, sufficient funds were available to complete the stadium.
Estadio Monumental reopened on 30 September 1989 with a friendly against Peñarol (2-1).
The stadium recorded its highest attendance in 1992 during the derby with Universidad de Chile. A total of 69,305 people were witness of the game.
In the following years capacity got gradually reduced due to safety measures and the installation of proper seats in 2006.
Estadio Monumental was one of the playing venues of the 2015 Copa America that was played in Chile.
