Chelsea FC have not been selected as the preferred bidder for the Battersea Power Stadium site, meaning a significant setback for the club that had hoped to build a new stadium next to the iconic out-of-use power plant.
The south-west Londoners were outbid by a Malaysian consortium which plans to turn the site into a “multi-use regeneration project” keeping the facade of the historical power plant intact.
In a reaction Chelsea stated to be “disappointed” and that “Battersea is one of a limited number of options the club is considering.” It will now have to refocus on the question whether the invest in expanding Stamford Bridge or move for a different site.
