The city of Montpellier has presented the final plans for an upgrade of Stade de la Mosson, choosing the desgins of architecture firm A+ Architecture as their preferred option.
Montpellier has long played with the idea of renovating the home of the local football and rugby club, but concrete decisions had thus far gotten postponed. They now seem more serious in executing the plans and hope to conclude building works in 2017.
The two most notable aspects of the renovation project are the new orange and white exterior that will wrap the stadium on three sides, and the the cantilever roof that will get built over the currently uncovered three-tiered stand. The new roof will be held up by two 76-metre tall masts.
Furthermore, extra hospitality and VIP facilities will get added, and the interior and catering facilities will receive an upgrade. Overall, the project is expected to cost at least €50 million.
The changes will have little impact on capacity, which will remain more or less the same. As Montpellier currently barely fills half of the stadium there is little need for further expansions.
Building works are scheduled to start in 2014 and to be completed three years later. As Montpellier has not been selected as a host city of Euro 2016, this has no affect on the tournament.
