Description
New Columbus Crew Stadium is the currently under construction new stadium of the Columbus Crew.
The Crew were the first of the MLS to open a new soccer-specific stadium in 1999. However, Mapfre Stadium was a rather modest structure and 15 years later the standard of MLS stadiums had significantly improved and the Crew’s attendances lagged amongst the worst in the MLS.
When in 2018 a new ownership acquired the Crew, they decided that an upgraded new stadium was needed at a more central place in the city near downtown. Putting pressure on the local council by threatening to move the club elsewhere, a site was found in the Arena District on the western edge of downtown near Huntington Park and the Nationwide Arena.
Plans were presented for a modern stadium, covered, with a capacity of 20,000 seats, comparable to their old ground. The project is expected to cost $230 mln.
Construction works started in 2019 and the Crew hope to move into their new home before the start of the 2021 MLS season.
