History and description
Stade Mohammed V officially opened on 6 March 1955. The stadium was initially called Stade Marcel-Cerdan after the French boxer, but this changed one year later to Stade d’honneur when Morocco became independent.
The stadium could initially hold 30,000 spectators, which got expanded to 90,000 in the late 1970s in preparation of the 1983 Mediterranean Games. Following the reopening of the stadium, it got renamed after Mohammed V, former King of Morroco.
Stade Mohammed V underwent a major refurbishment in the 2000s following Morocco’s bid for the 2010 World Cup. Benches were replaced with seats which reduced capacity to 67,000 seats. Another refurbishment in 2016 reduced capacity further to 45,000 seats.
