History and description

Brentford Community Stadium is the recently opened new home of London club Brentford FC.

Brentford had been looking for a replacement for the aged Griffin Park since the early 2000s. Initial plans were discarded in 2010 following the economic crisis but taken up again in 2012 when the club changed ownership.

The project became concrete in June 2012 when Brentford acquired a piece of land on Lionel Road at less than a mile east of Griffin Park. The club submitted for planning permission one year later in July 2013, and the purchase of the land was completed in 2016.

The club initially hoped to move into their new home by the start of the 2016-17 season, but works got delayed with various years.

Brentford Community Stadium hosted its first football match on 1 September 2020, a friendly between Brentford and Oxford United, albeit without crowds due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The stadium received a first limited crowd in December 2020 following a temporary lifting of restrictions during the pandemic.

Brentford Community Stadium is also the home of rugby side London Irish, who used to play their matches at Reading’s Madejski Stadium.

The new stadium forms part of a larger £250-million project that includes residential apartments.
