Nou Estadi de Tarragona got built in the early 1970s at the initiative of club president\u00a0Jos\u00e9 Luis Calder\u00f3n who wanted to move the club from their stadium at the Avenida Catalunya to a newer and larger one.<\/p>\n
The stadium officially opened on 2 February 1972 with a friendly against Barcelona (0-1). It could initially hold 18,000 spectators, but over the years this got reduced to 11,000 due to safety measures and various modifications.<\/p>\n
Nou Estadi got expanded again in 2006 when a new stand was built following Gimnastic’s promotion to La Liga.<\/p>\n
The stadium has been selected to host events during the 2017 Mediterranean Games in Tarragona.<\/p>\n
